Seattle, WA — The US Men’s soccer team will play Spain in Los Angeles Friday after FIFA President Gianni Infantino overturned their 4-1 loss to Belgium following a phone call from President Trump.
Explaining the decision, FIFA cited Belgium’s “excessive scoring” as “bringing the game into disrepute.” A Video Assisted Replay (VAR) post-game review also found the US team’s “clear and obvious errors” violated Fair Play rules.
A stunned Belgian side immediately appealed the ruling but were denied by FIFA’s independent judiciary.
“There is clear precedent for the United States to declare victory after a bad loss to a superior opponent,” the judiciary said in a statement.
“Just look at the Iran deal. And the reflecting pool.”
